Venice, 2nd September 2017 – A great occasion to demonstrate that Venice is able to host “naturally” the paddling sports, under the banner of agonism, spectacle and respect for that one that is the water city for excellence.
It is a strong and rich of significance message the one gave at the eve of the “ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships”, scheduled in Venice from Sunday 3rd to Friday 8th September. The great event, which will involve about 2,000 people – 1,600 athletes, 300 followers and about a hundred of volunteers – has been presented in Ca’ Farsetti, the institutional headquarter of the City of Venice, which is the first supporter of an event prestigiously patronized by the President of the Council of Ministers.
“We will welcome followers coming from 16 countries and the aim is to permit them to compete in Venice without affecting the normality of a city where, for the first time, in a proud and responsible way, we will bring a World Championships combining a great sport competition to a qualified tourism – this is the challenge of Andrea Bedin, president of the Organizing Committee of the Venice Canoe & Dragon Boat – We hope that this appointment can be a sort of forerunner and a stimulus for other agonistic paddling competitions in Venice”.
The ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships will represent for the city a modern exaltation of the historic relation between Venice and China under the sign of Marco Polo, thanks to a concrete synthesis of positive messages of socialization, history, culture, social aspects and sane sport.
The Tronchetto area (race field model “Albano” with 6 lanes on which the races with the simultaneous starting of the crews, with qualifying and final phases, will take place) has been chosen for the realization of the races in line on the distances of 200 and 500 meters. The Arsenale basin has been chosen for the circuit races on the distance of 2,000 meters (elliptical circuit, with straights and boa rounds, on which the chase races will take place).
“Rowing means to spread the Venetian culture and these World Championships will pass on our tradition with the right respect for the city – precise Giovanni Giusto, delegate counselor for the “Protection of Traditions” of the City of Venice (he was present at the presentation with the manager Manuele Medoro) – This amazing event will be a great occasion of international comparison, an example to follow because it is not true, as the organizers of the event can demonstrate, that in Venice it is not possible to welcome the high level agonistic sport”.
There will be present crews coming from China, Philippines, Great Britain, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Moldova, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Swiss, Ukraine, Hungary, United States and Sweden. In addition to the competitive crews, Students, Social, Corporate and Breast Cancer Survivors will also compete. The Pink Ladies belong to this last group, constituted by the ladies who have been operated for breast cancer and who use the dragon boat discipline as a rehabilitation activity and a moment of unity after the trauma.
“Their participation represent another reason of being proud of Venice hosting these World Championships – add Ermelinda Damiano, president of the Council of the City of Venice – A “something more” perfectly connected with this Administration that is very sensitive and occupied in pressing for the prevention of the younger women”.
The races program (from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm) involve the arrival of the crews on Sunday 3rd September, with three mixed crews participating to the Historical-Sport Parade in Gran Canal during the Historical Regatta. The opening ceremony will take place on Monday 4th September in Campo Santa Margherita (at 5:30 pm) after the parade of the participants from the Tronchetto (at 4:30 pm). From Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th September the races will take place, with qualifying rounds and finals on the distances of 500 and 200 meters on the race venue in front of the Tronchetto island nearby the Ponte della Libertà. On Friday 8th September the races on the distance of 2,000 meters will take place in the Arsenale basin and, at the end of the day, it will be celebrated the closing ceremony of the event.
